Mozilla power, Mac style
Mozilla has released 1.0 of its Camino Browser project. As a Mac user i’ve always been forced to use multiple browsers.
I’ve been satisfied with Apple’s Safari (my primary browser) ever since it’s been introduced. Firefox is my secondary browser, can’t let a browser with ugly UI widgets be my primary browser! I’ve never tried Camino before their 1.0 release (to be honest i expected Camino to suck).
I’ve always accepted that Safari has limited support for certain browser features and used Firefox to fill in the gaps. But I’d rather not!
Finally back to one browser
OK, I’ve just been using it for one day, it’s just something that i hope to be true! When i show our clients websites we developed I use Firefox because Safari doesn’t show everything perfectly. Firefox gives me ugly browser frames and widgets but hey, that’s something my clients, who are mostly Windows users, are used to.
So what made me switch (for the time being) from Safari to Camino?
Mac Style
Camino has a stylish look like we were used to with Safari (albeit without the metal brush look), but where does Camino teach Safari a lesson?
- Flash Player Performance; much better! As soon as a swf started using alpha transparancy animations or hefty text animations, Flash performance on Safari severely degraded. For example a foto presentation we developed for a client was sluggish in Safari but runs smoothly now.
- Better CSS support. Safari has trouble with quite a lot of features.
Mozilla Power
Camino is just like Firefox but a lot better!
- It’s better looking! OS X UI Widgets, unified Tiger app look & feel, prettier icons.
- It’s a lot faster! In starting up, in rendering pages. Just feels a lot smoother.
Exra candy
With Camitools you can extend your search box, show favicons in your tabs, change your User Agent and a lot more. Camitools also lets you Sync bookmarks between different Macs, but i think i’ll just use Ma.gnolia for storing online bookmarks ;)
