It’s exciting to see Google and Skype investing in a startup that is planning to spark a new revolution the coming years. The startup is called FON , and has the wild and genius idea to cover this planet with a WiFi network. If this idea gains critical mass (there are some hurdles to take) quite a few things will change for us. I’ve gone ahead and signed up to FON.
Mobile phones with WiFi
The first mobile phones are being launched with WiFi . A couple of advantages of using WiFi on your mobile phone is cheap rates for data and you have one number worldwide (your IP adress). Until now you had to leave your WiFi phone at the door but now dual-mode phones (UMTS/3G + WiFi) are offering the best of both worlds; good coverage and when you are in the neighbourhood of a local WiFi spot, cheap data rates. But that’s gonna change.
Slaughter the cash cow
Now take these two developments, global WiFi access and mobile phones with WiFi, and somethings about to change. FON is here. If FON ever gains critical mass multi-billion dollar companies like Vodafone and Cingular are in big trouble. You’ll be able to skype with your mobile phone almost for free with WiFi.
No wonder Skype is investing in FON! Suddenly that pricetag of $2,6 billion doesnt seem as hefty anymore. Imagine where WiFi technology will be in 10 years and try arguing Vodafone and Cingular won’t have to reinvent themselves. Their precious cash cows will be free.
WiFi Revolutie
Het is inspirerend om te zien dat Google en Skype investeren in iets wat telefonie en internet nog dichter bij elkaar gaat brengen. FON staat nu overal in het nieuws, maar wat betekent dit nou echt? Met initiatieven als FON zullen we straks overal, via WiFi, toegang hebben tot het internet. Ik heb me gelijk aangemeld als lid bij FON.
Mobiele telefoons met WiFi
De eerste mobiele telefoons met WiFi zijn al verkrijgbaar voor het brede publiek. Het voordeel van WiFi op je mobiel is dat data overdracht goedkoop is en dat je overal ter wereld bereikbaaar bent op hetzelfde (IP) nummer. Maar tot nu toe kon je Wifi-en tot je voordeur. Toestellen worden nu met een combinatie van UMTS (overal dekking, dataverkeer duur) en WiFi (locale dekking, goedkope dataverkeer) geleverd, maar dat is slechts voor nu.
Slachten van de cashcow
Koppel nu de bovenstaande twee ontwikkelingen aan elkaar en je ziet dat de telecom bedrijven een enorme uitdaging tegemoet gaan. FON is op het toneel verschenen. Mochten initiativen zoals FON echt van de grond komen (en de vraag is niet hoe maar wanneer) dan betekent dat inderdaad straks ‘skypen’ met je mobiele telefoon. Logisch dat Skype hierin investeert! Skype brengt niet voor niets mobiele telefoons op de markt. Het prijskaartje van 3,4 miljoen lijkt opeens minder overdreven.
Het wordt tijd voor Vodafone, Cingular etc (miljarden industrie) om iets te verzinnen voordat ze hun cash cows kwijt zijn.
